This Saturday, May 29th, last seasons Champions the Gore-Gore Rollergirls will face off against the 2nd place team, the Smoke City Betties.
For those not familiar with the Toronto Roller Derby League, it is the largest flat-track derby league in Canada boasting nearly 80 active skaters. These women are dedicated team members as they participate in all aspects of the league from being players to members of the Board of Directors.
If you are considering joining, you will only find out how serious these players are. After all, it is an extreme sport which requires both physical and mental preparation for jams, checks, hits, blocks, knocks, bumps and bruises. The league runs yearly try-outs and they recruit newbies to come during off-season to train until they are ready to pass a skill test and move up to a league team. They practice all year long, two to three nights a week and they are active participants in all aspects of running the league hosting bouts every 3-4 weeks and participating in at least one league committee.
These women display an amazing performance and it is definitely spectacular to watch!
